Open Ph.D. position at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia

We are looking for a candidate for an Industrial Doctorate (DI) at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC¡BarcelonaTech), in collaboration with the Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia (ICGC). Preferential training is in Civil, Environmental, and/or Geological Engineering.

The research will be conducted within the framework of the MonTSE Project.

Research Focus

  • Sediment transport modelling: From source areas in mountain torrent catchments to downstream transport along stream channels.
  • Semi-quantitative multi-hazard risk analysis: Assessing risks associated with rockfalls and debris floods.

  • Fieldwork Readiness: High motivation to conduct extensive field campaigns in mountainous terrain.
  • Technical Proficiency: Knowledge of programming and numerical modelling of debris flood mechanics.
  • Collaborative Mindset: Strong interest in interdisciplinary work and collaborative research environments.
  • Spanish or Catalan required

PhD position at EURAC and University of Bolzano

Eurac Research and University of Bolzano/Bozen are happy to announce a PhD position closely related to the Proslide project (www.mountainresearch.at/proslide).

The selected candidate will tackle the topic “Deciphering landslide occurrence under climate change in South Tyrol using interpretable data-driven models” spending at least 6 months at Eurac Research and at least 6 months abroad.
The candidates must explicitly express in the application their interest in this project.

PhD position at the University of Salerno

A PhD position in “Innovative monitoring and warning strategies for weather-induced landslides using IoT and Machine Learning” is offered at the University of Salerno, Italy. The deadline for applications is 14 July 2022.

The PhD research will be conducted as part of a recently funded Horizon Europe project, coordinated by Prof. Michele Calvello, called “The HuT (Human-Tech nexus): Building a safe haven for coping with climate extremes.” The project includes 26 EU Partners and 10 demonstrators across Europe. The HuT will employ innovative DRR solutions, accounting for the potential variations induced by climate change, and will deal with weather-induced events tackled with trans-disciplinary risk management tools and approaches.
